Louise Barnes of Team HOi (left in the photo) was delighted to participate in NHS Lothian’s "Culture Shift" event in Edinburgh, hosted by Paul Reid, CEO of Trickle. The event focused on continuous improvement and creating an open workplace culture.
Team HOi was invited to join a panel discussion alongside Lucy Kemp (Kemp&Co) and Simon Edgar of NHS Lothian. The panel discussion covered topics such as the impact of anonymity in negating unconscious bias and reducing barriers to employees providing honest feedback.
As part of the panel, Louise was asked to share her insights on the most effective approaches to shifting company culture and managing what is within people’s control in a changing work environment.
Louise highlighted the power of two-way mentoring, where juniors mentor seniors and vice versa. Traditionally, mentoring was seen as one-way, but juniors’ insights can significantly influence change, ensuring diverse and current thinking. She reminded the forum “You are at the front end of change and creating a new environment for those coming up behind you.” Louise also shared her experiences of working in a professional services company, with a focus on gender, to adapt people’s mindsets.
Additionally, Louise emphasised the importance of "controlling the controllables" in a fast-changing environment. She encouraged attendees not to lose sight of the better environment they aim to create, asking "What do you need in order to be productive and successful?"
Team HOi would like to thank the Medical Education team at NHS Lothian for the opportunity to be part of the event and Paul Reid of Trickle for inviting us to participate.
